Al Troyer lives in Elk Grove, in Sacramento County. He has a long history with organized labor. He worked for the State of California at the state publishing plant in Sacramento. He was a job steward and an activist in SEIU, local 1000, District Labor Council 784. He served as vice-chair and later as chair of Bargaining Unit 14, which was made up of printers and bookbinders. He also served on the SEIU State Council, until going legally blind which forced him into retirement. He was one of the Peace and Freedom Party members on the State Council at a time when over 10% of the leadership was registered Peace and Freedom Party. Al was a Peace and Freedom Party candidate for State Assembly in 2006, and he is the party's candidate this year in the 10th Assembly District.
The 10th District includes all of Amador County, and about one-fourth of the populations of Sacramento County, El Dorado County, and San Joaquin County. Cities in the district include Carmichael, El Dorado Hills, Elk Grove, Gold River, Ione, Jackson, Lodi, Rancho Cordova, Rancho Murieta and Stockton.
