From the Platform

We demand full equality for women in all aspects of life. Sexism is a major instrument for teaching relations of domination and inequality and for keeping one-half of the workforce underpaid or unpaid. We work to end oppressive sex roles in society. We must ensure equal rights and responsibilities in child raising. Unions must do more to organize women and promote women's leadership.

I am a Veteran and Grandfather for Peace. I retired from Cal State Long Beach in December 2007 after a 35 year career teaching Anthropology and Marxism. I am running on the Platform of the Peace and Freedom Party, the only working class, socialist party on the California ballot. I also support the Ten Key Values of the Green movement. My own political philosophy is best expressed in the Preamble to the Constitution of the Industrial Workers of the World, 1905:

The working class and the employing class have nothing in common. There can be no peace so long as hunger and want are found among millions of the working people while the few who make up the employing class have all the good things of life. Between these two classes a struggle must go on until the workers of the world organize as a class, take possession of the Earth and the machinery of production, and abolish the wage system.

I hope my campaign will contribute to the kind of consciousness and organization needed to do away with capitalism and build the new, socialist world called for in our Peace and Freedom Platform.

Background and qualifications: I was born and raised in Concord, California and graduated from UC, Berkeley. I served in the US Marine Corps from 1957-1960. I earned an MA from Yale and a PhD from Columbia University. I retired from Cal State Long Beach in December 2006 after a 35 year career teaching Anthropology and Marxism. I helped found the Peace Studies Program at CSULB, was active in the Peter Carr Peace Center and our faculty union, and worked closely with the Native American community in their struggle to save Puvungna, the sacred creation center on the Cal State Long Beach campus. I am helped found the Long Beach Area Peace Network (LBAPN). I was a Peace and Freedom Party candidate for Congress in Long Beach in 1982 and in the East Bay in 2008. I am currently affiliated with the Institute for the Critical Study of Society at the Niebyl-Proctor Marxist Library in Oakland.
