Ending Racism and National Oppression

Accompanying the continuing economic crisis, we see a rise in racial discrimination, increased terrorism against racially and nationally oppressed people, and retrenchment in civil rights. Minority families are disproportionately victimized by cutbacks in health care, education, child care, welfare, food stamps and jobs.

"I really care about our democratic political process," declares Elizabeth Martinez, the Peace and Freedom Party candidate for State Assembly in the 5th District. Martinez, of Citrus Heights in Sacramento County, is a student at American River College and food server at a local seafood restaurant. At 26 the youngest of six, she believes the future depends upon the involvement in the political process by the youth. "We have a responsibility to ourselves and our children to know the issues and raise our voices. Next to voting, our most important goal is getting others to register to vote."

"We are the future with no representation in the present. The Assembly does not have one representative who is really concerned about rising tuition rates. There are too many university administrators making salaries that are not justifiable, just as raising tuitions is not justifiable. There is no one representing us," she says.

"The immigration policy has become an ugly web of stereotype, racial bias, and discrimination. This country’s historical promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is a shining light to the world. All people who yearn for a better life for themselves and their families, respond today as did our ancestors. Our ancestors had the courage to risk their lives to be free of abusive power for a future of possibilities. The police state voted by the Arizona State Legislature is a direct blow to the foundation of our civil rights. We young people know that. We must raise our voices against wrong-doing."

The 5th Assembly district includes areas in Sacramento County to the north and east of Sacramento, including Citrus Heights and Folsom, plus the Granite Bay area of Placer County.
