Defense of the Environment

The same corporate forces and economic system that exploit and brutalize the world's working class people are destroying the world's biosphere. These social policies and ecological destruction often overlap. Socialism is necessary to end the ecological destruction caused by capitalism. Our goal is a society that is in harmony with nature as it is in harmony with its own people.

Marylou Cabral

Marylou Cabral, 22, is the Peace and Freedom Party's candidate for California Secretary of State. Cabral is a student at California State University Long Beach, where she is studying to be a public school art teacher. She was the main organizer of the largest CSULB campus protest against the Iraq war in 2007, and is currently involved in campus campaigns to stop budget cuts and tuition hikes.

As a volunteer organizer with the ANSWER Coalition (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), she traveled to Washington, D.C., on Sept. 15, 2007, and spoke to 100,000 people at an anti-war protest in front of the White House. She also helped build a march of over 10,000 in Washington against the U.S.-Israeli war on Gaza in 2009. She has led protests of thousands in Los Angeles from 2007-09.

In 2008, Cabral ran as a socialist candidate for Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, District 4. She is a member of Peace and Freedom Party and the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

In the June 3, 2008 election, Cabral finished second out of three candidates in her race against right-wing incumbent Don Knabe. Cabral won 23,703 votes-about 18 percent-in the 4th District with a campaign that focused on fighting racist police brutality. The 4th District includes Long Beach, Cerritos, Whittier, San Pedro and many other communities.

Cabral is the daughter of immigrants from Zacatecas and Sinaloa, Mexico. She has promoted the immigrant rights cause for years, first as a child in Orange County where she worked in a club representing Mexicans from the state of Zacatecas living in the United States. In recent years, Cabral has become a leading immigrant rights organizer in Los Angeles County, rallying tens of thousands at pro- immigrant marches in 2006-09. She believes that all people, regardless of immigration status, should have equal rights, including the right to vote.

She is adamantly against the corporate owners, ruling-class politicians and the racism, sexism, anti- LGBT bigotry and exploitation they promote.

Cabral is a candidate struggling to build class unity in everything she does.

From the statewide Voter Information Guide

Strengthen democracy by lowering the voting age to 16, extending the right to vote to immigrants and prisoners, and making Election Day a holiday.
