Election 2018: Greens Endorse Four Statewide Peace and Freedom Candidates
Posted on April 16, 2018 by the Communications Committee
The California Green Party has endorsed four Peace and Freedom Party statewide candidates: John Thompson Parker for US Senate, Mary Lou Finley for Controller, Kevin Akin for Treasurer, and Nathalie Hrizi for Insurance Commissioner. The Green Party announced their formal endorsements of candidates for statewide office on Saturday, April 14.
The endorsements were voted on on-line by the Green Party of California Standing General Assembly, with some 115 members representing 33 county organizations. Each endorsement required a two-thirds favorable vote. The four Peace and Freedom Party candidates who were endorsed are not facing any Green opponents in the 5 June primary election. The Green Party recently changed its bylaws so that endorsements are not limited to Greens. Endorsed candidates must not receive corporate donations and must not be affiliated with any party that receives corporate donations.
The Peace and Freedom Party endorsed several Green candidates for Congress and State Assembly in mid-March. Those endorsements will appear in sample ballots or local ballot pamphlets. While the Green endorsements come too late to be printed in ballot pamphlets, they will be announced on the candidates' websites and in campaign literature. State Treasurer candidate Kevin Akin, the current State Chair of the Peace and Freedom Party, said that the endorsements "are very helpful and much appreciated, and should help us get substantial votes in the 5 June Primary. In these times of crisis, working people need to unite to defend themselves and push for peace, against austerity, and to protect our rights."
Peace and Freedom Party joins in saying no to US wars
Peace and Freedom Party members were among the over 500 protesters saying “no” to US wars at home and abroad at the Oakland, California, demonstration on April 15. We protested the latest illegal US aggression in Syria along with a host of other issues.

Election 2018: PFP candidates’ statements for the official voter information guide
The following are the statements in the official Voter Information Guide for the Peace and Freedom Party statewide candidates running in the June 5 primary election. Some are short and to the point, as state law requires a high price per word for the statements, and they must be paid for before the candidate has even qualified for the ballot. The Voter Information Guide is mailed to every voter in the state by the Secretary of State about one month before the election. The Peace and Freedom Party candidates submitted statements that cover a broad range of issues relevant to the various offices.
Gloria Estela La Riva, PFP candidate for Governor
For too long, corporations, banks and the Pentagon have dominated society. The result: Half of all people live in or near poverty. Housing costs are skyrocketing. Immigrants get scapegoated. The prison population and police repression grow. The environment is being destroyed. Enough! Vote socialist! Get involved!

C.T. Weber, PFP candidate for CA Secretary of State
Do you feel that your vote doesn’t count? No one in government is paying attention to your issues? You’re not alone. Polls show large majorities want a third party, but bipartisan election laws, private money, and the corporate media prevent this and deny representation for many of us, making democracy an illusion. We used to have six candidates on our general election ballot. Now, we only have two, often from the same party. That’s horrible! Let’s get rid of Top-Two and have more choices in our general elections. Many countries use Proportional Representation to elect multiple legislators from each district, with parties and independents elected in proportion to their number of votes. Fewer votes are wasted, gerrymandering ceases to be useful, there are higher voter turnouts, and those elected are more diverse. If a party gets half the votes it gets half the seats, not all of them. If a party or independent candidate gets 10% of the votes, that party or candidate gets 10% of the seats, not none of them. That way the majority is protected and minorities get voice and representation. Let’s replace Top-Two with Proportional Representation. Let’s get money out of politics. Money has corrupted our political system. Let’s establish a clean money type of equal public funding to those candidates who raise a base amount. Make these costly voter information guide statements free again. Please vote for me to show your support for fair and open elections.

Kevin Akin, PFP candidate for State Treasurer
I favor promoting and strengthening socially-owned economic units like cooperatives and credit unions, municipal utilities, public roads and transit. A publicly-owned State Bank would save enormous sums for the people.
To me, socialism means democratic control and social ownership of our economy. To win it, we must break the billionaires’ economic and political power.

John Thompson Parker, PFP candidate for U.S. Senate
“End capitalism—don’t enable it.” Trump’s deportations, police terror, giveaways to corporations, white supremacy, misogyny, poverty, are part of capitalism, and inspired by the previous administration’s record deportations and wars. Your vote for socialist Parker counts—it’s not supporting enablers, but instead inspiring a movement for revolutionary change.

Vote! Vote! Vote! in the June Primary
Vote in the June primary! The primary on June 5 will likely be the only chance to vote for Socialist candidates for office. Only the top two vote-getters will go on to the November general election. The Peace and Freedom Party has six statewide candidates on the ballot, for Governor, Secretary of State, Insurance Commissioner, Treasurer, Controller, and US Senate. We have also endorsed Gayle McLaughlin for lieutenant governor.
Peace and Freedom Party candidates are raising issues of importance to the working class, issues the Democrats and Republicans ignore. We support single-payer health care and a state bank; we oppose red-lining insurance availability and costs. We need proportional representation and equal public funding in order to have fair elections. We oppose US imperialism and endless war. We want free education from pre-K through university, and we support public schools. We support the repeal of the Costa-Hawkins law that cripples local rent control, and we recognize the need for decent housing for working-class families throughout the state of California.
We know these issues are important to you, as they are to us. Let’s work together to build a California for the working class! If you don’t vote for Socialist candidates in June, you most certainly will not have Socialists on the ballot in November.
For the Peace and Freedom Party to continue on the California ballot, at least one of our statewide candidates must receive 2% of the vote in June. If you want to continue having an alternative voice on the ballot from the Democrats and Republicans, vote in the June primary. Vote Peace and Freedom!
The California state primary will be held on Tuesday, June 5. For information on registering to vote in California, click here.

Election 2018: The Peace & Freedom Party Candidates
On November 6, Californians will be voting in the 2018 Gubernatorial Elections, an election that will also include elections of lieutenant governor, senators, state representatives, attorney general and several key executive official positions.
Seven Peace and Freedom Party candidates to date have filed to run for statewide office in the June 2018 California Primary. Our current slate of candidates, plus one independent candidate the PFP is endorsing, is as follows.
Gloria La Riva — Peace and Freedom Party candidate, Governor
Gloria La Riva is a veteran social justice, anti-war and union activist and organizer. She was 2010 and 2014 candidate for governor, and 2016 Peace and Freedom Party and Party for Socialism and Liberation candidate for U.S. president.
Gayle McLaughlin —
Peace and Freedom Party endorsee, Lieutenant Governor
Gayle McLaughlin is a former two-term mayor of Richmond, where she founded the Richmond Progressive Alliance. As mayor, Gayle led Richmond’s remarkable transformation which included reducing homicides by 75%, increasing the minimum wage, promoting sustainable development, advocating rent control, defending immigrant rights, progressively taxing corporate interests, defending public schools and opposing the expansion of charter schools. Gayle is proudly corporate-free and running for Lieutenant Governor with one concept at center: People First!
John Thompson Parker —
Peace and Freedom Party candidate, U.S. Senator
John is a coordinator of the International Action Center, an elected member of the Peace and Freedom Party State Central Committee, and an activist with the Workers World Party. He is a socialist who seeks to represent the working class rather than the billionaires. John says, “In these days when the Trump administration is trying to divide and weaken the working class, solidarity in each other’s struggles is our most important weapon.” Among John’s top priorities as a U.S. Senator include stopping police killings, redistributing monies devoted to “endless wars” into social necessities such as free healthcare, and ending the prison-industrial complex.

Election 2018: PFP’s Jordan Mills wows audience at 49th Congressional District Candidates Forum
On March 9, the Vista Civic Center was the site for a forum featuring eight candidates in contention for the 49th Congressional District seat, including Peace and Freedom Party’s own Jordan Mills. The forum was hosted by the Chambers of Commerce of Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas and San Diego, as well as the League of Women Voters. Over 400 were in attendance.
(image courtesy North County Daily Star)
Among those present was Jordan Mills for Congress campaign worker Eric McGill who told us: “I’m pleased to report that the event went *excellently*. There were eight candidates present (Jordan, two Democrats, four Republicans, and a Libertarian) and Jordan got more applause than the other candidates on almost every question he answered. He articulated our program perfectly, and the audience was really engaged. A lot of people who had shown up to support another candidate (like, they were wearing campaign T-shirts) told us they really liked what Jordan was saying, and I could hear people in the rows behind me talking about him the whole time. The event couldn’t have gone better.”
The Peace and Freedom Party invites you to see for yourself. Video of the debate in its entirety is available for viewing via the North County Daily Star’s website. Jordan spoke on the following topics and the times listed, usually getting much positive response and raucous cheering.
PFP endorses seven more candidates running in June 2018 primary election
In addition to endorsing our own slate of six statewide candidates, one Congressional candidate and one independent for Lt. Governor, the Peace and Freedom Party has also to date endorsed seven more candidates running for office in California's June 2018 primary election. The following are those seven candidates; for a list of Peace and Freedom Party candidates, please click here.
Jason Kishineff —
Peace and Freedom Party endorsee, U.S. Congress, 5th district
Inspired by Bernie Sanders to take over the Congress and end Citizens United, Jason is running for Congress with a goal of kicking corporate interests out of our political system, so that a people’s agenda may someday flourish. Some of my other priorities include stopping fracking and oil dependency; universal healthcare and college education; ending for-profit wars; real electoral reform that includes greater debate access for third parties; and reforming the racist criminal justice system.
Robert Christian Richardson —
Peace and Freedom Party endorsee, U.S. Congress, 7th district
As Chris tells it: “There are a number of issues that really need to be addressed, and i was thinking, 'Boy, somebody ought to do something.' Then i thought, 'Oh shit, that's me.’” So did the now-retired longtime VA Medical Center programming specialist decide to run for U.S. Congress representing California's 7th district comprising east Sacramento County. He promises to get the people more of a voice and right some wrongs in Washington. For much more from Chris, please click here.
Angelica Dueñas —
Peace and Freedom Party endorsee, U.S. Congress, 29th district
Mother fighting for her kids' future and a future for all of us. The Angelica Duenas for Congress campaign is a grassroots movement of beautiful individuals dedicated to building a future of peace, justice, democracy and equality, all out of our love for humanity. We hope to build a future where All have the right to Shelter, Food, Education and Employment through a movement of Peace and Unity.

PFP's 2018 Campaign Fund
Let’s face it: We can’t fight for working people at the ballot box (or anywhere else) without spending money. We don’t represent the owners of the businesses that pay for and control, directly and indirectly, the major political parties. The capitalists are not going to help us – not one cent.
We need your help to stand up for working people in the 2018 election and beyond.
