The state's elected leaders won't do it, so it is up to the people. A new proposed initiative would amend the California Constitution to establish a single-payer medical plan covering all Californians.

Not yet on the streets at press time, the California Health Security Initiative already has an impressive and growing list of endorsers: Offi cers and activists in more than 40 unions, doctors and teachers and writers, community leaders from over 30 cities, county supervisors, legislators and four candidates for U.S. President.

Contact phones are (San Francisco) 415-867-0628, (Santa Cruz) 831-688-8692 and (Los Angeles) 310-399-2215. Call to volunteer to circulate petitions in your area or workplace. On the web at you may sign up as an endorser.

For further information on the initiative and other healthcare matters, see pages 2 and 3 of this issue.
