Personal statement by Kevin Akin, California State Chair of the Peace and Freedom Party, on May 31, 2010

I just received word of the shameful attack on the international aid ships on their way to Gaza. The Israeli government has committed a grave crime in killing numerous humanitarian aid workers, who did not menace Israel in any way.

The Peace and Freedom Party will release a statement on this incident later, after appropriate review and approval by its officers. Meanwhile, I am releasing this personal statement to urge anyone who can to participate in protests around California, the United States, and the world. This incident cannot be allowed to pass, ignored in the spate of bad news, so much of it provided by the enemies of peace in Washington, and in Israel and other US client states.

I am a Jew. I take considerable pride in the Jewish tradition of help to those in need, and the tradition of seeking peace and justice. The present Israeli government is one of the world's most active enemies of peace and justice, and it just shot many good people seeking to help those in need in suffering Gaza.

Nothing could possibly make me ashamed to be a Jew. But I am ashamed that Bibi Netanyahu, Avigdor Liberman, and the rest of their thuggish crew in the Israeli government are Jews.

I urge everyone, of every religion and school of thought, to make it plain to the Israeli government and their patrons in Washington that this murder of peace activists cannot be tolerated. The aid flotilla should be allowed to dock in Gaza. The blockade on humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza should be lifted entirely. The expansion of Israeli settlements on the West Bank should be stopped immediately. The Israeli Knesset should immediately begin real negotiations aimed at establishing a just peace between the Israelis and Palestinians, which would be a big step toward peace in the world.

I urge everyone in the United States to make plain to our own government that aid to the Netanyahu-Liberman gang should end, as a step toward peace.

I love my relatives and friends in Israel. Most of them are as disgusted with their government as am I. Peace is in their interest. I know a number of Palestinians in the United States. They love their relatives and friends in Gaza and the West Bank, too. None of the ones I happen to know have any patience for the narrow fanatics of Hamas, now in control in Gaza. But how can they tolerate the dirty blockade of Gaza, the follow-up to the dirty war of a year and a half ago? Whatever our backgrounds, we should all work for peace, for humanitarian aid, and for a prosperous and secure Middle East, that can only come with the end of the occupations.

Speak out for peace, speak out for friendship in these difficult times, speak out for justice, speak out for ending the continuing shameful oppression of occupation. Peace to all of you.
